At the 2008 “Winter Show” held in Sisseton, South Dakota, I was privileged to view an exhibit of 300 pieces of original artwork by a group of local artists who called themselves the “South Dakota Artists of the Prairie”. What a show! What an inspiration!
I was overwhelmed by the number and quality of artistic pieces on display—so overwhelmed I couldn’t help but think it was a shame that these artists had no place to display and offer for sale their artwork.
A couple of months passed, and I kept thinking about the artwork I had seen. On June 1st, a small rental area in my husband’s building materials business became available. I contacted a number of the artists whose work I had seen at the Winter Show and told them I was considering opening an art gallery. I asked them if they would be interested in displaying and offering for sale their artwork. The responses I received were positive!
In a leap of faith, I began the process of renovating the space—new paint, lighting, and fixtures, but, most importantly, a new attitude! The space, which had formerly been occupied by a floor covering business, was transformed into a charming, new venue showcasing colorful works of art by the “South Dakota Artists of the Prairie” and other local and area artists.
On November 15, 2008, The Blue Dragonfly Gallery & Studio was born.
If you are ever in the area, please be our guest. We’d love to see you!
